1  DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES.  Underline the correct relative pronoun.
a)    The man who / which bought all the books by Hemingway has died.
b)   He's the man that / whose car was stolen last week.
c)    A doctor is a person who / whose has been trained in medical science.
d)    I need someone which / that can do the work quickly.
e)    This is the funniest film that / when has ever come from Ealing Studios.
f)     I met a woman where / who lives near your sister.
g)    Is there anyone which / who knows how this machine works?

2  DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES. Join the sentences:
1. Pass me the dictionary. I put it on the shelf.
2. Will you help me to do the exercises? I don’t understand the exercises.
3. We haven’t met Mr Smith yet. His daughter studies with Paul.
4. We won’t forget the day. We went to Justin Beaber’s concert that day.
5. Peter has read the book. I recommended the book to him.
6. They sent me a postcard of the hotel. They stayed there on holiday.
7. This is my best friend. I met her at school ten years ago.
8. Is this the man? This man accused you of stealing his wallet.
9. Peter made a lemon cake. It is his speciality.
10. I want you to introduce you to Mrs Black. Her husband is an engineer.
11. Can you show me the room? Meetings are held in that room.
12. I don’t know the man. Sue is dancing with him.

3  DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES.  Cross the unnecessary relative pronoun out.

a)    Children who play with fire are in great danger of harm.
b)   That's the boy who I invited to the party.
c)    There's the house that I'd like to buy.
d)    They were sure to visit the town whose location was little known.
e)    It was everything that he had ever wanted.
f)     There were only a few that really interested him.
g)    A conductor is a person who collects fares on bus or tram.
h)    He's the sort of man that will do anything to help people in trouble.
i)     The aunt who came to see us last week is my father's sister.
j)     The library didn't have the book that I wanted.
k)    The man whose coat had been stolen immediately reported the theft.
l)     The person that he takes after is his mother.
m)  This is something which I refuse to put up with.
n)    The teacher who looked after our class today doesn’t normally work here.
o)   The flowers that I bought yesterday have already died.

4  NON-DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES.  Combine the following sentences.  Use relative pronouns.

a)    Al Gore gave a long and boring speech.  He won the Nobel Prize.
b)   The Nobel Prize winner gave a long speech.  He had worked to fight global warming.
c)    Starbucks wants to open many new stores in China.  Starbucks does business all over the world.
d)    Social network sites will greatly change business works.  They have exploded in popularity.
e)    Scientists are working on with stem cells.  These will hopefully revolutionize medicine.
f)     Jim is very nice.  We met him yesterday.
g)    Mr Brown has been invited to join our club.  He enjoys going to the theatre.
h)    Whiting House is an important local monument.  It was built in 1856.
i)     The Victoria Line was London's first complete new tube for 60 years.  It was opened in 1969.
j)     The damaged ship was listing dangerously when last seen.  Its crew has now been taken off.
k)    The new hospital will be officially opened in March.  The Queen has taken a great personal interest in it.
l)     The singer had been signing autographs.  His most recent recording was successful.
m)  The artist was one of the best he had ever seen.  He could not remember his name.

5  RELATIVE CLAUSES.  Decide whether the following clauses are defining or non-defining clauses.  Insert commas where necessary.
a)    The car which was a rare sports coupe was built in 1966.
b)   We invited the boy who Tom had met the week before to the party.
c)    Our friends who we met at university are coming to visit next week.
d)    That is the building where they shot the film 'Vanilla Sky'.
e)    Mr Jackson whose son also goes to this school will be attending the party next weekend.
f)     The author's latest book which has become a bestseller is about two children in Jamaica.
g)    There’s something that you should know.
h)    He’s the person to whom we were talking yesterday.
i)     I come from Edinburgh which is a historic, cosmopolitan and cultural city and it’s the capital of Scotland.
j)     The grass which I cut every week seems to grow very quickly.

6   Defining or Non-defining? Combine the following sentences using a relative pronoun. Make any necessary changes in punctuation

  1. This is the computer. I bought it last month
  2. MTV started in Amsterdam. MTV is a popular video music channel
  3. MTV reaches millions of household. Its influence is growing rapidly
  4. I remember the day. We recorded our first album that day
  5. Is this the place? Do they sell discs for the DVD rom?
  6. The boy is very satisfied. I sold a video game to that boy last week
  7. Martin is a talented musician. He appeared on MTV early this year
  8. This is the computer game. Everybody is talking about it
