Rewriting with modal verbs: Examples

     Aquí os muestro algunos ejemplos de cómo reescribir frases con modales.  Son ejemplos, en clase hemos trabajado con otras frases que debes repasar y/o añadir a esta lista.  Asociar los comienzos de las frases o palabras claves con el modal es una buena forma de estudiarlos.  ( por ejemplo, si la frase usa Perhaps/Maybe puedo usar modales de probabilidad como might/may/could ).  Pero no lo hagas de memoria, es algo lógico.
     Otra cosa que debéis mirar es si la frase que debes reescribir se  refiere al presente o al pasado.
    

It’s possible that we go on holidays to the Bahamas next summer. 
We might/may/could go on holidays to the Bahamas next summer.

It was not necessary for you buy a ticket. I had a spare one!
You needn’t have bought a ticket. I had a spare one!

It would have been a good idea to tell Peter not to wear those flowery shorts.
Someone should have told Peter not to wear those flowery shorts.

I’ve heard that William inherited a fortune last year. I’m not sure whether it’s true.
William might/may/could have inherited a fortune last year.

Mary was out of town last week. It’s impossible that you saw her.
You couldn’t have seen Mary last week.

Susan is not likely to play a major role in “Romeo and Juliet”.
Susan might not play a major role in “Romeo and Juliet”

There’s no need for you to apologize.
You needn’t apologize.


I have the obligation to wash the dishes after dinner every Monday.
I have to/must wash the dishes after dinner every Monday.

There’s a prohibition for students to eat in the library.
                  Students mustn’t eat in the library.
